New data center opened in Rosenheim

Rosenheim, May 28, 2025 – With nearly 100 guests from politics, science, and business in attendance, EMC Home of Data celebrated the grand opening of its new data center at Salinstraße 19 – directly on the KFO (Kathrein) campus in Rosenheim – on May 27. The event marked the expansion of the Munich-based data center operator's colocation capacities, the connection to the national and international network of MuCon-X – and provided an important impetus for digital sovereignty in southeastern Bavaria: the relevance of cooperation between regional institutions.

The new data center at the KFO campus (Kathrein) in Rosenheim expands the existing range of EMC Home of Data's own facilities, which only began operating the new MuCon-X data node, including new data center space in Munich, at the beginning of the year. Rosenheim will serve as an edge and geo-redundancy location in the EMC Home of Data infrastructure network, giving the southeast Bavaria region direct access to the powerful MuCon-X network of national and international providers.

“With the opening of MuCon-X as an internet hub for Munich and the DACH region, we have built a bridge to the digital world of tomorrow,” explains Bernhard Huter, Managing Director of EMC Home of Data. “Via the new data center, we are now extending this bridge directly to Rosenheim, thus creating a solid foundation for confident digitalization in the southeast Bavaria region.”

The data center will also be home to the IT of co-initiator artcodix GmbH, including the infrastructure of the Rosenheim Technical University and Digitalhub Bayern: an alliance of companies, EMC Home of Data GmbH, artcodix GmbH, komro GmbH, and Bitpoint AG, which aims to enable companies to implement their IT strategy with regional partners.

 

The speakers of the day, including Rosenheim's mayor Andreas März and Werner Theiner, president of German Mittelstand e.V., emphasized the role that regional infrastructure plays in the implementation of digital strategies and its importance for the economic and technological development of the region. In particular, they highlighted the relevance of regional partnerships and alliances in this context.

“The economy doesn't start in Berlin – it starts with us. In town halls. In marketplaces. And in the new data center in Rosenheim. EMC Home of Data shows that digitalization doesn't have to be loud, but can be done locally, securely, and simply,” said Werner Theiner.

Prof. Heinrich Köster from the Rosenheim Technical University highlighted the connection between education, business, and digitalization. The impetus for the new location arose from the close cooperation between the university and the regionally based IT service provider artcodix, which is run by former TH students, as well as the goal of outsourcing the university's IT infrastructure in a future-proof manner.

“The role of TH Rosenheim in the history of this data center is a good example of how digitalization can work at the regional level,” said Bernhard Huter. During his presentation, he emphasized: "I myself live in Munich, but I grew up in Inzell – and where is Rosenheim? Right between Munich and Inzell. Is that a coincidence? More likely a sign of what can come from regional ties.“

Andreas Köglmeier and Anton Kathrein gave the guests insights into the history of the building and Kathrein's role in the development of the site.

In addition to the speakers, the Bavarian State Ministry of Digital Affairs was also represented with a video message from Dr. Fabian Mehring, Minister of State for Digital Affairs.

”This data center is much more than a building with a few servers in it. It is a shining symbol of our determination to [...] actively shape the digital future,“ said Dr. Fabian Mehring.

The motto of Digitalhub Bayern – ”Digitalization in Bavarian" – was not only programmatic, but also shaped the entire evening. Anton Schauer,

Head of Systems Engineering and Services / IT at komro, summed it up: “The phrase was used in almost all of the speeches. This shows that we got something right with our motto – and that Digitalhub Bayern is tackling something important with its project.”
